What to Expect - Going through the ADHD Evaluation Process

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that can interfere with daily functioning and quality of life. ADHD is a condition that presents in childhood, but in some cases it is not diagnosed until adulthood. Psychiatric conditions other than ADHD can also have symptoms that impact attention.

How is ADHD diagnosed?

Exploring an ADHD diagnosis will be a collaborative effort between you and your board certified Lavender NP. Through comprehensive evaluation you and your NP can arrive at an accurate diagnosis and develop a tailored treatment plan.

At the start of treatment, your NP will obtain a thorough history to gather important information about your symptoms and the daily challenges you are experiencing.  It will take more than one session for your NP to obtain a full history. Additionally, your Lavender NP will request that you complete self-report questionnaires designed to measure the severity and impact of your symptoms, as well as explore the possibility of other psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety.

An important aspect of ADHD diagnosis is collateral information from past medical providers, and sometimes family members who knew you when you were a child and your ADHD symptoms first developed. Your NP may ask you to sign a release of information so they can speak to other providers familiar with your history. Rest assured that Lavender is HIPAA compliant, and all conversations with or documentation from other providers will be strictly confidential and used only for the purpose of your treatment. It can take time to connect with collateral sources, however, it is an integral part of exploring an ADHD diagnosis.

What if I have already been diagnosed with ADHD in the past?

If you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD in the past, your Lavender NP will ask you to sign a release of information to request records from your previous provider. You can also reach out to your previous provider directly to request these records. These records are an important part of treatment, and sometimes treatment cannot be initiated until records are received.

How is ADHD treated?

Following diagnosis, your NP will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan which may include a combination of interventions such as medications, behavioral therapies, emotional support, and lifestyle adjustments. ADHD medications can affect cardiovascular function, so Lavender NPs will screen for cardiovascular risk factors and require a recent blood pressure and heart rate reading before your prescription is sent to the pharmacy. You can check your blood pressure and heart rate at most chain pharmacies.

Can I get a prescription for ADHD medication right away?

Clients struggling with symptoms of ADHD often feel a sense of urgency to obtain a diagnosis and treatment. Lavender’s goal is to accommodate client’s needs while maintaining best practice and providing the highest quality of care. By knowing what to expect during the evaluation process, you can approach it with confidence and prepare for a path toward improved well-being. Thank you for your patience.
